Where a Chicago work van actually gets looked at

Chicago is 77 community areas and, at the 2020 census, 2,746,388 residents. A service vehicle in the city spends its day in two very different places: stuck in expressway traffic between jobs, and parked at the curb on a commercial street while the crew is inside. A wrap has to work in both.

The expressways

The Kennedy Expressway (I-90/I-94) runs from the Jane Byrne Interchange out to O'Hare and carries up to 327,000 vehicles a day; it and the Dan Ryan are counted among the busiest roads in the Midwest. The Eisenhower (I-290) heads west from the same interchange, and its stretch between First Avenue in Maywood and Mannheim Road, known as "the Avenues," has a long reputation for backups.

Slow traffic changes the design math. At highway speed in the suburbs, a driver gets a glance. At a crawl on the Kennedy, the person in the next lane has time to read the whole side panel. That is the one place where a short list of services under the logo earns its space, as long as the company name and phone number stay the biggest things on the vehicle.

Neighborhood commercial streets

Off the expressway, the audience is on foot. 26th Street in Little Village is the city's second-highest-grossing shopping district, behind only Michigan Avenue. Devon Avenue in West Ridge is lined with South Asian shops, restaurants and grocery stores. Fulton Market on the Near West Side, once a meatpacking and warehouse district, now mixes corporate headquarters, tech offices, hotels, restaurants and retail. A van parked on any of those streets is seen at arm's length by people who live or work nearby, which is exactly who most trades want to reach.

Designing for the city's business mix

Chicago's economy is spread out: no single industry employs more than 14% of the workforce. The Loop is the second-largest central business district in the country, and the city still has designated industrial corridors such as Kinzie, Pilsen and the Stockyards. That mix shows up in who calls a wrap shop: plumbers and electricians who service condo towers and two-flats, caterers and food vendors, cleaning crews, movers, and small distributors working out of an industrial corridor.

Rear doors and the curb side

In the city the rear doors do more work than in the suburbs. They are what the car behind you reads at every light, and what pedestrians see when you are parked nose-in to a loading spot. A good city layout puts the name, the service and a phone number on the back in large type, and keeps the curb side clean enough to read from the sidewalk.

Copy that fits the neighborhood

If most of your customers are in one part of the city, say so on the vehicle. A neighborhood name, or a second language your customers actually use, tells a passerby you work their block. Your free mockup is the time to try that out before anything is printed.

Parking, routes and day-to-day wear

A few city realities are worth planning around before you pick a design:

  • Lake Shore Drive is mostly off limits to trucks. Trucks are prohibited on the Outer Drive except for a section between I-55 and 31st Street, so if you run a box truck, its exposure comes from the expressways and arterial streets rather than the lakefront.
  • Street parking means close contact. Tight curbs and alleys mean scuffs. Cast film from 3M or Avery holds up for years, but a hand wash on a regular schedule keeps it looking sharp, and lighter corner graphics hide road grime better than a solid dark bumper area.
  • Know the rules where the vehicle sleeps. If you park a lettered vehicle at home, check with your building, condo association or the city before you assume it is allowed on your block.

Bringing the vehicle out to Itasca

We do not install on the street. Every wrap is printed, laminated and installed inside our shop at 1337 E Industrial Dr in Itasca, about 24.6 miles from the Loop. Without traffic the drive is about 38 minutes straight out the Eisenhower; at rush hour, traffic often adds a lot to that, so plan the drop-off for early morning or the gap between rush hours.

The design and quote happen before anyone drives anywhere. A written price lands within 24 hours of your request, and the mockup costs nothing and comes before any payment. From the day you sign off, production needs 3 to 5 business days; the vehicle then spends about a day in our bay, so the whole job usually means one trip out and one trip back.

Running several vehicles? We have one install bay, so a fleet goes through one vehicle at a time on a schedule that keeps the rest of your vans working in the city. The more vehicles in the order, the bigger the fleet discount, topping out at 12% for 25 or more.

Vehicle Wrap Questions From Chicago Businesses

Ask us anything else: 847-637-0009.

Do you install wraps in Chicago, or do I bring the vehicle to you?

You bring it to us. Every wrap is printed, laminated and installed inside our shop at 1337 E Industrial Dr in Itasca, about 38 minutes from the Loop without traffic. Indoor installation keeps dust and weather off the film. Most installs take one day, so plan on one trip out to drop off and another to pick up, usually a day apart.

What is the best time to drive a vehicle from Chicago to Itasca?

Without traffic it is about 38 minutes out the Eisenhower (I-290), but rush hour often adds a lot to that. Early-morning or midday trips avoid the worst of it. Since the quote and mockup are handled before the vehicle comes in, the drive is usually just a drop-off and a pickup, so pick the hours that keep your driver out of the peak.

My van is parked on the street every night. Will the wrap hold up?

Our wraps use 3M and Avery premium cast films, rated for a typical 5 to 7 years, plus a 5-year warranty on workmanship. Street parking does mean more scuffs, so regular hand washing helps, and we can lay out the design so the lower panels and corners hide everyday wear better.

Can I see the design before I pay?

Yes. Nothing is paid until you have seen and approved a free mockup of your own vehicle, and the written quote arrives within 24 hours of your request. Approved designs are ready for install 3 to 5 business days later. A print-ready file of your own means no design fee; our design packages start at $299.

Do you wrap box trucks that run routes in the city?

Yes. Box trucks are priced on request because sizes and body styles vary so much. Keep in mind that trucks are barred from most of Lake Shore Drive, so a box truck's audience in Chicago is mostly on the expressways and arterial streets. We design the sides and rear for that kind of viewing.

How do fleet discounts work for a Chicago company with several vans?

Fleet discounts are 3% for 2 to 4 vehicles, 7% for 5 to 9, 10% for 10 to 24 and 12% for 25 or more. We have one install bay, so we schedule vehicles one after another and keep the rest of your fleet on the road while each one is in the shop.
